Community Patrols During the daytime, when many residents are away and criminals target their rural properties, the Edwards-Metcalfe Watch patrols provide a visible presence and deterrence to criminal activity in our rural community. In fact, on many occasions, reports of suspicious vehicles and activity reported by our patrols have provided important leads to the Ottawa-Carleton Police crime investigations. We try to patrol every day. Our patrols consist of two volunteer members, equipped with a cell phone and driving a private vehicle, identified with magnetic and rooftop signs. If patrollers spot anything suspicious, they immediately phone the Ottawa Police Communications Centre and the closest police patrol vehicle is dispatched. Our patrollers only report any suspicious activities: they do not intervene. Members have been helpful assisting at road accidents by phoning for emergency aid. They also keep an eye out for elderly residents and lend a hand whenever the opportunity rises.
Community Observation Members who are unable to patrol regularly may take the role of observer, keeping a close watch on our area as they go about their daily activities and reporting any suspicious activity to the police. Observers are provided with a window sticker for their car, a note pad to record details, and the phone numbers of the police.
Community Education We attempt to educate the community on crime prevention, primarily through our web site, newsletters and our twice-yearly general meetings, which usually feature reports from the police and an invited speaker. |
